Abstract

Trichosporon spp. are yeast-like fungi,a rare cause of mycotic sepsis. We share a case report of a thirty-three year old man with polytrauma after a car accident, who died after a long hospitalization and treatment in intensive care unit. Four blood samples for blood culture were submitted to the Microbiology laboratory in MHAT-Shumen, which were all positive for fungi. The tests available and performed in our laboratory were insufficient for species identification. Pure culture was sent to National Reference Laboratory of Mycology and identified as Trichosporon coremiiforme. Mycotic sepsis remains a challenge in terms of diagnosis and therapy and often has a fatal outcome.
